Natural skincare ingredients that are not vegan

Natural skincare is wonderful for your skin but not always for animals.  Here is a collection of some of the most common “natural” ingredients used in skincare and haircare that can be derived from animals.

Details

Squalene – Can be sourced from shark and fish livers.  Vegan skincare is derived from olives.

Hyaluronic  Acid – Can be sourced from Rooster combs.  Vegan is produced through fermentation of a plant material.

Glycerin – Can be derived from animal fats.  Vegan is produced from flaxseeds and plant materials.

Carmine – A bright red colour used in Colour Cosmetics is made from crushing cochineal bugs.  Vegan Cosmetics red can be made through iron oxides and some plants.

Lecithin – Can be derived from eggs.  Vegan comes from soy or sunflowers.

Retinol – Can be from beef, chicken, liver, fish and eggs.  Vegan is sourced from bakuchiol, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes and can be made synthetically.

Keratin – Protein from the ground up horns, hooves, feathers and quills  and hair from various animals.

Oleic Acid – From animal fats.  Vegan comes from plants like seabuckthorn, Neem, Argan, Camellia and more.

We use vegan alternatives in our skincare products because who wants to put animal parts on your face?   We also use an organically sourced beeswax in our lip balm.  Whilst this isn’t considered truly vegan, it means no animals were harmed to collect the wax.   There is a vegan lip balm alternative.
