What Nut oils are used in Skincare?

For most people nuts aren’t an issue, however for those who have a nut or peanut (technically legume and not a nut) allergy it is a different story. According to Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia, almost 3% of children aged 1 and above have a peanut allergy.  My son is allergic to peanuts and thankfully is only mild compared to some.  His little friend who comes over to play has an entourage of EpiPens and medication and is allergic to more than just peanuts.  Navigating the nut free lifestyle is tricky as nuts are in a lot of things, including skincare.  Almond oil, for instance is used in a lot of lip products.

There are several nut oils used in skincare, the most common being Almond, Macadamia, Shea, and Argan.  Nut oils do have fantastic properties, but so do other oils that don’t trigger nut related allergies.  Whilst some nut oil manufacturers claim the allergen protein is taken out of their oils during manufacturing, it can’t be guaranteed that it’s present, even in tiny amounts.  When it comes to allergies, it is best to avoid triggers and nut oils in skincare should be avoided, if you are allergic.
